Good morning, all!
TL;DR version:
Week 5 games are cancelled and will be made up on May 9th, our first make-up game day.
The longer explanation:
We’ve been up since 6:30 looking at the radar and how the rain is moving along. Based on most of the radar feeds of the apps we use, it looks like rain will reach our area sometime in the 9am (ish) hour.
Radar is showing a developing line of rain immediately to our west/southwest with movement to the east/northeast and a subsequent line of thunderstorms forming behind that back in western and central Alabama.
The initial line of rain doesn’t appear to have any embedded thunderstorms but as the day begins to heat up and the atmosphere begins to churn that could change, rapidly.
As we have always said before, the safety of our athletes, families and volunteers is of the utmost importance. Normally, if it were just rain that would be occurring, I would attempt to have our games in the hope that we may be able to squeeze them in before the main body of rain arrived but given the instability of the atmosphere and the fact that several of the apps mention a possibility of thunderstorms forming this morning but especially early this afternoon during the latter part of Game 2 and Game 3, I must take that into account as well.
Additionally, given that the field can be slippery with moisture on it, and with no sunlight to help dry out the field it could remain slick once some rain occurs.
Therefore, out of an abundance of caution (and a bunch of radar feeds,) I am going to cancel the Week 5 games. Week 5 games will be made up on May 9th, our first make-up game date.
Mother Nature will most likely make me regret canceling this week’s games and make me look overly cautious but, again, everyone’s safety is paramount.
Thank you, as always, for the support of our program!
